I. OBJECTIVE: 16 out of 19 learners will demonstrate ability to do simple research on an animal and write a short description of the animal as a plant friend or foe by completing, in pairs, WS #1 with 95% accuracy.
II. SET (WHAT): Overhead, overhead transparencies, overhead markers, Wild Life Fact Files section 5, WS #1, index cards, sentence strips, pocket chart, plant friend or foe interactive bulletin board, plant friends and foes. Students will be seated during the demonstration of the lesson. Expectations for the lesson are that students will listen carefully to the directions so that they can successfully complete the research and description.
III. PROVIDING INFORMATION (HOW): (questions, modeling, sequencing, learning principles, monitoring, etc.) The teacher will model how to do simple research and writing a short description, following the guidelines on the overhead. After finishing, the teacher will ask the students questions about researching an animal and writing a description.
IV. GUIDED PRACTICE (MATERIALS): (monitoring, learning, practice, directions, questions, etc.) The teacher will read descriptions of different animals and the students will have to decide if that animal is a plant friend or foe. The teacher will then model how to research the eating habits of one of the animals from the Wild Life Fact Files. The teacher will then write a short description of the animal on the sentence strips. The teacher will select a few students to complete a second plant friend or foe, using the guidelines on the overhead.
CLOSURE (EVALUATION): (Does the activity meet the objective? All learners assessed?) 16 out of 19 learners will demonstrate ability to do simple research on an animal and write a short description of the animal as a plant friend or foe by completing, in pairs, WS #1 with 95% accuracy.
V. INDEPENDENT PRACTICE (CONTINUING EVALUATION): Working in pairs, students will research an animal, find out if it is a plant friend or foe and write a short description of the animal on WS #1.
